Upgrading the Linksys WRT54G firmware
There are several firmware options besides the versions linksys comes out with. My personal favorite is DD-WRT v23 is the most recent as of 12/25/05. It supports the following routers.
WRT54G 1.0/1.1
WRT54G 2.0
WRT54G 2.2
WRT54G 3.0
WRT54G 3.1
WRT54G 4.0
WRT54GL 1.0
WRT54GS 1.0
WRT54GS 1.1
WRT54GS 2.0
WRT54GS 2.1
WRT54GS 3.0
WRT54GS 4.0
If you are looking to purchasing one of these routers dd-wrt recommends the WRT54GS because it has more memory available built into the router. There are some hacks that allow you to add more memory to run other applications on your wrt54g/gs router. There is the simple samba mount to your local linux machine. This can be set in v23 on the Administration -> Managment page.
Another way is to mount a SD card which is a little risky. Here is a link to those instructions.
The best way to upgrade your WRT54G/GS router to dd-wrt is download the latest version of the firmware, login to the admin of your linksys firmware and upgrade it from the admin console. I recommend being connected directly to the router and not doing it over a wireless connection. I noticed the first time I installed dd-wrt it took a good 30 seconds for the router to reboot and come back online. If you happen to brick your WRT54G/GS (bricking your router means it does not respond anymore) while trying upload the code you can take a look at this.

[…] The slingbox is a little deceptive where on the side of the box it says it can connect to your 802.11a/b/g home network. It is true but you need a wireless adapter to plug into your slingbox to make it wireless. Here is how I made mine wireless. First you need to update your WRT54G/GS with DD-WRT. One of the newest features available in the administrator console in dd-wrt v23 is wireless bridging. Here is the setup. […]
