CableCARD certs rule out home-built Windows MCE boxes, other DVRs

Posted in All, Software, Hardware by digg on the January 31st, 2006

This is bad news. Those planning on upgrading their media Center PC to take advantage of Vista’s CableCARD support had better sit down for this oneâyou’re going to need a new computer, and you can forget about building it yourself. This could also be a big problem for MythTV and BeyondTV, as well.

Who gets paid more you or Google co-founders?

Posted in All, News by sw on the January 24th, 2006

Well since about everything you see on the web has google mentioned on it you wouldn’t think you get paid more money than any of the top 3 Google executives.  Chariman and CEO Eric Schmidt and co-founders and co-presidents, Larry Page and Sergey Brin aggreed to be paid annual salaries of $1 each in 2006.  So does that mean if they need a loan from the bank they have to go on stated income and take the higher interest rate?  Probably not because I can’t really think of anything the world they would need a loan for to buy.  On Friday January 20, Google had a 14 percent decline in the company’s stock price because of a legal spat with the US Justice Department.  On Monday January 23, Google shares rebounded back up 7 percent for a gain of $28.04 per share.  This gain meant that Schmidt’s shares had gained $413.8 million in value in one day of trading.  Not bad for a loomy Monday.  Schmidt’s total value in Google closed at roughly $6.3 billion on Monday (resource).

Microsoft Testing Media Center TV Streaming

Posted in All, Technology by sw on the January 20th, 2006

According to this entry Microsoft is trying to add streaming media to computers and handhelds. Doesn’t microsoft basically already have this with media center extenders from linksys? I guess the difference is making the the stream compression good enough to work over a broadband connection.  Maybe MS should work on the compression of their own dvr-ms format.

Windows Media Center

Posted in All, Technology, Hardware by sw on the January 18th, 2006

Although I already have a Scientific Atlantic’s Explorer 8000HD DVR I thought I would want the capability to to save some of the things I record on DVD. So I purchased a Dell Dimension 5500 with Microsoft Windows Media Center on it. After configuring the tuner card that came with it, which was very buggy. I think I had to reboot the computer several times because I kept on getting the error “the tv card is being used by another application” well yeah the media center is using it. I finally got it all hooked up and started watching tv instead of working. It is very distracting working on your computer with a small tv window in the corner on your 21in widescreen (1680×1050) display.
